Also known as the ‘sacred kingfisher’, this native New Zealand bird inhabits watery areas such as coastal and river margins around the country. They are distinctive, small birds with a solid bill for hunting, green-blue feathers on their wings and a cream-buff colour on their body.
This feather has been hand carved from a piece of salvaged matai timber and coloured with iridescent acrylic paint to replicate the vibrant blue of the kōtare. Piece measures 48 x 8 x 1cm, is lightweight and fitted with a tri-ring for easy hanging indoors. Finished with beeswax polish, use a soft cloth to remove dust. Not recommended for display in full sun or near heat.
